Yesterday I read an article about really immersing Art students in a project. They learned about texture and line and all kinds of things using chickens. Crazy. I never would have thought of it, but it really touched me. The students got to play with and hold actual chickens and learned about the feathers, beaks, combs, and all parts of the bird. Then they worked on textures that they saw, eventually drawing a chicken and painting it. These were Kindergarten students, and their chickens looked fantastic.
How can I do this in my room? Not necessarily the chickens, just the immersion. That way the students really remember what you have taught them. I have a smart board I don’t utilize…mostly because the computer it is attached to is ridiculously slow. I also have student computers that don’t save anything. That is no good. They can’t even work on something in more than one sitting. I just had a thought...I'll use my thumb drive!
Right now we are learning about color. This week is about the temperature of colors. I’ve talked about how you can look at some things and tell whether they are hot or cold by the color they are….but other than describing, I don’t know what else to do. They get it, but is that enough? Hopefully I will continue to think this way...could lead to better teaching!
