A New Year 2008 - 2009

August of 2008 rolled around and I hadn't come up with anything. I had gotten lost in the goings-on of life over the summer. I started out trying to teach elements and principles and all of the basics...completely losing my audience. So...I went back to cookie-cutter art. I attended the fall AAEA conference and learned a lot of exciting things about art in Arkansas. I heard from a teacher about Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB)(link to the right) and realized that she held the answer to my problem. A TAB classroom might also be referred to as Choice-Based Education, where the students have a choice in how they learn.

Teaching for Artistic Behavior suggests that you set up art centers where the students can experiment with the different media. Students have a choice in what center they go to as well as a choice in what they create. Students are able to use their internal motivations to create artwork.

I returned to school enthused and began planning out changes for my classroom. All of this happened right before the holidays and so I went ahead and finished out the semester with cookie-cutter art to give myself time to plan and organize my classroom. I began preparing my students for the changes by getting them used to a new routine when entering class, although they still had no idea what I had in store for them in the next semester!
